Vikki and Rich’s Colourful Wedding: Disco Balls, Flashmobs and So Much Fun!

Vikki and Rich’s vision for their day was colour, disco balls, laughter and fun and they certainly delivered. This is the story of their colourful wedding, and a little bit about the wonderful Lancashire venue that hosted it.
When fellow celebrant Vikki asked me if I would conduct her colourful wedding to the lovely Rich, I’ll admit I was slightly nervous. Doing a ceremony for a fellow celebrant – someone who knows exactly what it takes to make a wedding unique, thoughtful and joyous – is a tough act to follow. The fact that Vikki and Rich’s ceremony was taking place at the other end of the country, somewhere with no shortage of celebrants to choose from, made it all the more flattering. And I’m always up for a bit of travel, especially when it means heading up to a venue as special as Holmes Mill in Clitheroe.

A Gorgeous Love Story
Vikki and Rich’s story began back in August 2014, in a pub. Like many modern couples, they’d started chatting online, which led to that first, fateful evening at the Fletcher Moss. Vikki turned up a few minutes late, which set the tone for a running theme! Rich was simply relieved to have met someone who wouldn’t glaze over when he talked about the obscure corners of the world he’d travelled. As it turned out, the two of them had more in common than either expected: both had lived abroad, both had just bought houses mid-renovation, and both had plenty of travel tales to swap. The conversation flowed for hours, and Vikki gave Rich a lift “almost” home at the end of the night.
From there, eleven years unfolded – full of charity shop finds, Eurovision score sheets, real crime documentaries, old-school rave anthems, and a fair few travel disasters turned into brilliant stories. Along the way they moved into their forever home, slowly turning it from fixer-upper into their cosy dream space.
The proposal came on a trip to Berlin where Rich got down on one knee while Vikki thought she was simply posing for a photo. By her own account, her mouth opened and closed like a haddock! Everyone around them cheered, and the celebrations carried on late into the night.

A Holmes Mill Colourful Wedding Full of Personality
True to their word, Vikki and Rich’s big day was bursting with personality from start to finish. The colour palette of burgundy and hot pink ran through everything, and many of the gorgeous dahlia flowers dotted around the ceremony space had been grown by Vikki herself – a lovely, personal touch that only a celebrant-slash-secret-gardener could pull off.
Surprises and audience participation was woven through the whole ceremony beginning with a cute audio message to Rich from Vikki’s cute little flower girl before the ceremony began. As the ceremony progressed, the rings were passed through the hands of every guest to silently bless with a word or intention to support Vikki and Rich in their marriage. Vikki and Rich had also written their own personal vows as a surprise to each other – such a touching moment.

Nobody saw the biggest surprise coming – least of all Vikki. Unbeknown to her, her BFF and Best Man, Michael, had spent months quietly organising a flashmob, straight out of the ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ – eat your heart out Rupert Everett. When he first called me about it a couple of months before the wedding, I was all in. What made it even better was that Vikki had no idea it was coming, even when the two of them sat down and watched the film together the night before the wedding! The flashmob went off without a hitch straight after the certificate signing, and the room erupted!

Their dog, Hettie, made her own surprise appearance too, sharing ring-bearing duties with Michael and knowing exactly when to bark for the audience’s benefit. No wedding is complete without a four-legged guest stealing a little of the limelight, and Hettie clearly knew how to work a crowd!

Once the vows and rings were exchanged (settled, rather brilliantly, by a game of rock, paper, scissors to decide who went first), and Vikki and Rich had signed their certificate to Friday I’m In Love, it was outside for the traditional confetti shower. Naturally, it was colourful Flutter Darlings confetti all the way – there is no such thing as too much confetti!

Celebrations at Holmes Mill
After the ceremony, guests headed back indoors for drinks and a spot of bowling in the bowling alley at Holmes Mill – a fun, informal way to keep the celebrations going once the emotional heavy lifting of the ceremony was done. It was perfect for the relaxed setting that suited Vikki and Rich down to the ground. They later sat down for dinner surrounded by their family and friends in a cosy celebration that continued well into the evening.

Holmes Mill holds a special place in Vikki’s heart, too, as she regularly performs weddings there herself – and she and Rich are known to spend many a date night at the cinema within the complex, so getting married there felt like the most fitting choice of all.
For anyone who hasn’t yet had the pleasure, Holmes Mill is one of Lancashire’s most distinctive events venues in the heart of the Ribble Valley. The mill was originally established as a working cotton mill and has since been lovingly restored, with its late-Victorian, Grade II-listed heritage carefully preserved and enhanced to create a multi use venue full of quirks.

Combine the exposed brick, soaring windows and industrial character of the original mill buildings with a genuinely warm, characterful atmosphere, and it’s little wonder Holmes Mill has become such a sought-after wedding venue in the north of England. It offers something a little different from the traditional country house or barn wedding – colourful, and full of personality, much like the couple who got married there!
Final Thoughts
Vikki and Rich’s wedding was everything they set out to create: colourful, joyful, packed with surprises, and so true to who they are as a couple. From the flowers Vikki grew herself to the flashmob Michael pulled off in secrecy, to Hetty’s perfectly timed barking, every detail told a little bit of their story. Add in the industrial charm of Holmes Mill, a round or two of bowling, and a room full of people who clearly adore them – and you have a wedding day that will be talked about for years to come.
It was an honour to be the celebrant standing alongside them, and an even bigger honour to be trusted with the words for a day this special. Here’s to Vikki and Rich, and many more Eurovision score sheets, charity shop finds, and adventures together.
